DescriptionA Police SAR Squad winter training exercise up on the Old Man Range, in the Symes road area. Survival skills using tents as shelter.
The Old Man range sits from 800 m above sea level to 1,696 m at the Obelisk/Kopuwai. The ranges are dotted with distinctive schist rock tors and bisected by fields of freeze-thaw hummocks and mounds, creating a wave-like effect across the slopes and basins. The range is very exposed and shelters the Alexandra basin from the deep south, snow falls all year round on the range and there have been significant Search and Rescue missions into this area.
