Berwick Lodge, Otago

Berwick Lodge is situated 45 kilometres south of Dunedin. It is located near the Sinclair Wetlands and is set amongst exotic forest with native bush nearby. 

The Lodge provides accommodation for a maximum of 67 people and has indoor facilities which include a modern kitchen, dining room and lounge, a gymnasium with a climbing wall, male and female toilets and showers, a drying room and a sauna.  All facilities can be accessed by covered walkways. The outdoor activities that can be utilised include abseiling, confidence course, flying fox, initiative course, kayaking, orientation course, rifle range and tramping.  Some of these activities can only be undertaken with certified instructors and with the knowledge of the warden. The Lodge is run by the Otago Outdoor Adventure Trust and is well used by schools and other youth groups throughout the region.

About a third of the Berwick Lodge was hit by an early morning slip in May 2011 during a training event for a Red Cross emergency response team. The 42 people present evacuated the building before it began to move, but the slip trapped several vehicles and took out the boys' accommodation and part of the access way to the sauna. All damage was repaired along with significant improvements to the buildings and site. Some work was covered by insurance but community support helped provide a large part of the overall repair bill.
