DescriptionIvan McLachlan talks to Matthew Sheat (Dunedin LandSAR and Police SAR squad) about a combined exercise with Dunedin and Otago SAR groups.
The exercise was based in the French ridge bivvy area.
They talk about equipment on exercises and how this has all changed over time including radio comms in the wilderness and the coverage but also the weight in carrying in this early comms equipment on searches.
A pigeon was taken on this particular exercise - the pigeon was from Dunedin and he believe flew back home to this location. Ivan also talks about the use of a runner and the importance of having someone being able to run out as comms were way more unreliable at the time. Jerry Aspinell took the radio up by horse often.
Also discussed is the use of the AREC personnel on the radios.
