Scouting Jamboree in Auckland 1959
Details
DescriptionAt the age of fifteen Allan Espie had just become a senior Scout. He belonged to the Kensington Scout group.
In January 1959 the opportunity to go to a Jamboree in Auckland came about and Allan and his sister Marion (a Cub Master) along with many others from Dunedin travelled by train and ship to Auckland. It was a long road trip as they sailed from the Wellington dock of Littleton.
This was the year that Coca Cola arrived in New Zealand. All the boys were very excited and consumed the new beverage with gusto.
When they arrived at the jamboree they assembled in groups and were allocated to tents which was to be their accommodation for the length of the jamboree.
There was a lot of dust and heat to contend with as well as a huge adventure which was all quite overwhelming for a boy from the country. Sightseeing was on the agenda as well as many scout activities. Things that stand out in Allan's memory are a visit to the Zoo (a first for him) as well as the Western Springs speedway. The boys had to cook their own meals which was done outdoors.
Allan brought the souvenir programme home with him.
Betty White also attended the Jamboree as she was a Cub Master and at the time was working for the National Bank. She volunteered to go to the Jamboree to work in the bank which was on the site of the Jamboree. It was a very well organised event.
