SAWMILL
By the time Mr L.L. Stark arrived from California in November 1903 to work for the Waipori Company, he found that an efficient sawmill was erected turning timber out for the flume for which 35 million super pi were required. This was milled from red birch growing in the vicinity, the mill being supplied by power from a pelion wheel driven from Shepherd’s Creek and developing 25 hp.
The timber when cut was elevated to table land 1,100 feet above by means of a wire rope tramway hoist operated by the pelion wheel, to a lumber pile in direct line from the sawmill.
