Dr John Mills, General Practitioner (Retired)
Dr John Mills, General Practitioner (Retired).
Dr Mills was based in South Dunedin as a GP from 1983 to 2015.
“I had patients in that practice who I was seeing the third generation; mum and dad, the child and the grandchild.”
He was in charge of the Otago Branch of Sports Medicine based in the Dunedin Rugby Club in a curtained-off section of the bar. There were trestle tables where “I sewed them up and dealt with their sprains”. He remembers times when he was sewing up patients while someone was spilling beer trying to get him to hurry up. The clinic dealt with rugby and netball injuries along with other sporting injuries.
Dr Mills held the record for the number of patients seen in an afternoon (81), which he held for many years.
