“The strength of the language is starting to grow in Dunedin.”
Komene is a passionate communicator and educator in Te Reo living in South Dunedin. Along with his wife Paulette Tamati-Elliffe, Komene Cassidy was awarded the 2015 Māori Language Leadership Award, Community Section. To Komene and his family, Te Reo is a living language and an essential part of every day life. Te Reo is spoken more or less exclusively in his house, and widely in the community. He previously taught Māori at King’s High School. When they first moved to Dunedin, the schools of South Dunedin attracted them to the area, with parks, shops, and schools all so accessible. This helps with their third son, currently studying at Tahuna Intermediate, who is in a wheelchair.
