Waikouaiti Library

In 1862 Rev J.A. Fenton and Miss Emily Orbell set up a library in the local school, with much of the collection donated by Mr Fenton.

The Library moved to the Atheneum in Geelong Street for a while, until the library patrons financed the purchase of the hall adjacent to the Mechanics Institute and opened a library and reading room in 1875.

In 1889 a cottage was established as the Librarian's residence, and in 1905 additional shelves were built to house the growing collection.

In 1959, with support from the Country Library Service, the Council took control of the Library and a free library service was made available to residents of Waikouaiti Borough.

The Library moved to the RSA Community Centre in 1974 and a children's section was established. 

After the 1989 council amalgamation, Country Library support ceased and stock from Dunedin City Library was provided instead.

By 1994 it was clear that the building was not structurally sound and it was decided to demolish and rebuild the Library, partly funded by Atheneum funds and partly by the Lottery Grants Board. 

The current Library building opened on 29th Feburary 1996.
