South Dunedin Community Pop-up Library

The South Dunedin Community Pop-Up opened on Friday, 8 September 2017.

The Pop-Up, located at 199 Hillside Road, provides a range of DCC services to the South Dunedin community. These include community development support services, customer service facilities to make enquiries, payments and purchase rubbish bags, library services which include around 2000 books and access to the library catalogue and digital collections.

Aroha Novak has provided artistic input including a distinctive tukutuku panel design for the carpet floor tiles, a heritage wall panel and the display of works by local artists in the facility.

The Pop-Up also provides a focal point for the community to provide feedback and input into the development of the permanent South Dunedin Library and Community Complex.

It was intended that the Pop-Up facility would remain in place for about two years during the development of the permanent facility. In 2019, the DCC bought a suitable site for the complex – on the corner of King Edward Street and Macandrew Road. In January 2021, the DCC announced the existing buildings on that site would be demolished to make way for a new single-storey, purpose-built facility.
