In 1898 A H Whitehouse imported a movie camera and became NZ's first film-maker. He made 10 films and was the first person to publicly screen a New Zealand film with the help of Auckland photographer W H Bartlett. Whitehouse and Bartlett filmed the opening of the Industrial and Mining Exhibition in 1898.
Whitehouse's film "The Departure of the Second Contingent for the Boer War" (1900) is New Zealand's oldest surviving film.
