NZSA was formerly known as the NZ PEN Centre, and was established in 1934. The Otago-Southland Branch covers a wide geographical area, but comes together to support writers with professional representation, literary awards and advocacy. The NZSA partner with Dunedin Public Libraries annually to present the National Poetry Day event with the sponsorship of Phantom Billstickers National Poetry Day and funding from local arts grants.
