5 Mountfort Street, Outram - Former Bank of Otago

The prominent Dunedin architect, Robert Lawson (1833-1906), designed this building for the Bank of Otago in 1869. John Clayton was awarded the construction contract.

The bank, built of plastered triple brick, consisted of a banking chamber and manager's office. The rest of the building was the manager's residence, and the smaller adjoining building contained a storeroom, scullery and kitchen. Stables were at the rear of the property.

In 1873, the bank was taken over by the National Bank of New Zealand. The bank continued as both a branch and then an agency until 1957. Since 1958, the property has been privately owned as a family home.

The building has a Category 2 listing from Heritage New Zealand, signifying a 'place of historic or cultural significance'.
