DescriptionJoseph George (1881 -1949), the son of Geryes Boulos Fakhri of Becharre, Lebanon immigrated to Dunedin in 1900 with his wife Nora (Nurr Romanos) and baby daughter Mary. Upon arrival he was reunited with his older brother Michael George (who married Josephine Luddos) and a sister Christina (who married Joseph Hannah) in Dunedin. He left behind three sisters, Barboura, Yesmeen (who both married and remained in Becharre) and Soraya (who ? immigrated to Argentina)
Initially Joseph became a hawker like many other Lebanese, but then shifted to farming and sawmilling in Te Wae Wae, Southland where four more children were born including my grandmother (sitti) Katie (Soraya George). Then he purchased 100 acres of land in 1910 in Kahuika, near the Tahakopa river in the Catlins, South Otago where he and his growing family lived for the next 14 years. He had sheep, cows, pigs and an apple orchard and continued to supplement his income with felling trees and saw milling. Another 5 children were born here and most of them attended the Tahakopa local school. Two children of the ten born died in infancy.
In 1934, since some of his daughters had married and shifted to Dunedin and Nora's health had deteriorated (she was almost blind from diabetes) he sold his farm and bought a house in Whitby St, Mornington. In 1944 he purchased a larger house at 110 Stafford St( from his income felling trees for the council) and shifted his family there, there though sadly, Nora died two weeks before the move. Joseph died peacefully, aged 68 years, in 1949 when at the movies with his son John (Jock George) in the Octagon Theatre. The Stafford St house remained in the George family, with his other son Joseph George until 1981. There are many George descendants in Dunedin and other parts of NZ and Australia.

Mary (1899- 1956) Annie (1901 - 1935) Christina (1902 - 04) Kate (Soraya) (1906 - 1973) Jean (Jamillie) (1908 - 2001) Margaret (1911-1996) John (1912 - 1980) Joseph (1916 - 1981) Michael (1915-1915) and Jessie (1924 - 2014).
