Let us stand our great-grandfather back
In that paddock in South Otago in the 1920s.
He’s left the mountain light of Lebanon
To be in this grassy vista where his cattle graze.
The late sun in on the tops of the hills
He is hungry and home rises in him,
The tastes, the village, those he left behind.
The sky he stands under makes him lonely.
Then the sound he is beginning to think of
As the sound of his new home,
His Scottish neighbor,
Another lone figure in the landscape –
The skirl & wheeze & blow of his bagpipes.
