Roger Barrowclough
Roger Barrowclough initially was a member of the Otago University Tramping club, then the Otago Section of the New Zealand Alpine club, but also a key member in the Federated Mountain Clubs, Mountain Safety Council, The Parks board, and a founding member of what we know today as Search and Rescue. Roger was also a keen photographer, and member of the local photographic society, there are many slides of alpine and outdoor trips documenting his early adventures and experiences in the New Zealand Wilderness, and this experience would become part of his extensive knowledge and experience with Search and Rescue as an important figure in the organisation's structure and history, and as a national advisor to SAR.
Roger was a greatly respected and influential member of Search and Rescue. He also held a large body of both documents, ephemera and photographs of events and training relating to the outdoors and Search and Rescue. His high level involvement, both in a professional sense as a lawyer and recreational and operational experience in the National Parks board, The Mountain Safety Council, Federated Mountain Clubs, local Alpine and tramping clubs, Search and Rescue along with the NZ Army and the Otago Aero Club, leaves behind him a legacy for both the history and future of the outdoors in New Zealand.
