Akatore Creek

Akatore Creek, Otago

Akatore Creek is a stream in Otago. The Akatore Creek catchment lies south of Taieri Mouth and has been identified as nationally important for biodiversity.

 Although large tracts of wetland have gradually been lost to burning, drainage, and land-use intensification, extraordinary examples of wetland ecosystems still remain. These wetlands continue to support a diversity of native birds, fish, invertebrates, and plants, many of which are threatened and depend on wetland environments for survival.

Maori value these wetlands for food, craft and building materials, and medicinal resources, while locals and tourists welcome the opportunities they offer for outdoor recreational activities.

The Otago Rock and Mineral Club for many years held the mining rights to Rhodonite, the wonderful pink coloured mineral of manganese found South of Akatore Creek. Many fine specimens have been taken from the site and early reports indicate that large quant’s were removed in 44 gallon drums by helicopter in the 70’s.
