Taieri River
The name "Taieri" is thought to come from the Maori word taiari meaning "spring tide". The Taieri River is the fourth-longest river in New Zealand. Rising in the Lammerlaw ranges, it initially flows north, then east around the Rock and Pillar range before turning southeast, reaching the sea 30 kilometres south of Dunedin. The Taieri is 200 kilometres long of which the last 20 kilometres are navigable. Towns along the river include Middlemarch, Outram, Allanton, Mosgiel, Henley and Taieri Mouth. Its major tributary is the Waipori River, which meets the Taieri near Henley on the Taieri Plains.
The Taieri River is an important geographic, economic, and environmental feature of east Otago. The river corridor has been an important pathway for access to central Otago since the early days of human settlement. Ten million years ago, the Taieri River was a short drainage system that drained coastal hills. These hills were formed by some uplift of schist bedrock along faults and addition of volcanic cones, particularly around what is now Dunedin city.
The Taieri is a large river that rises in the central Otago region and then flows over a variety of terrain from easy open sections through to steep inaccessible gorges. Fish are plentiful throughout its lengths but some sections are much more popular due to ease of access and the fishing conditions the river offers.
