DescriptionJames Knarston (1839-1930) came to Otago on the City of Dunedin in 1864 as a member of the crew. When he became a business partner with Joseph Harrison, Harrison did all the buying in Dunedin for both stores at Taieri Ferry and Taieri Mouth and Knarston rowed up and down the river twice a week, taking up produce and bringing down provisions.
He continued to make these trips well into the 1900’s.
James Knarston and his sons operated passenger and freight services on the river between the Railway Station of Titri and Taieri Mouth and began a similar road service to Dunedin in 1922. Descendants on James Knarston are still very much part of the Taieri Mouth Community
