Details
DescriptionIn 1873 Joseph Harrison bought the Taieri Ferry Store and then contracted Thomas Agnew to build a store at the mouth of the river. The Taieri Mouth Store was completed and opened for business in 1874. The post Office was transferred there as well. In 1875, Joseph Harrison took in a partner, James Knarston, to manage the Taieri Mouth Store. James Knarston became the first full-time resident postmaster at Taieri Mouth. Thomas Agnew was hired to build a house for the Knarston Family alongside the Post Office and Store. The home was completed in February 1876.
With the Store firmly established, the number of people living in Taieri Mouth began to increase. The Taieri Mouth Store closed in 1996.
