Date taken1900'sGeo location[1] James Knarston was an Orkney man who had come to Otago on the City of Dunedin in 1864 as a crew member. He became a partner with
Joseph Harrison, owner of the Taieri Ferry Store and Knarston rowed up and down the Taieri River twice a week with the produce. He later bought out Harrison, running both stores. Later in life he returned to Taieri Mouth where he spent the rest of his life within the sight of the sea.
