TitleTobia Isaac Coory Family 
DescriptionHala, my Grandmother, married Tobia, my Grandfather in 1892. When they emigrated from Lebanon to New Zealand around 1893, their surname was Coory however they were known as Isaac. Fakhri or Coory was the tribal name of Tobia. Hala would have been aged around 15 or 16 years of age. Hala and Tobia were first cousins. Hala had two brothers and a sister that I know of. The Brothers names were Elias and Asaad. I believe Elias and Assad emigrated to South Africa where they were known by the surname of Fagri, which is close to Fakhri the tribal name. I have been in contact with Jospeh Fagri, who unfortunately passed away recently in Perth, Australia. Joseph was a son of Elias and Nephew of Hala. More recently I have been in contact with Ronnie Fagri, a brother of Joseph who currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hala also had a sister named Saida who also emigrated to South Africa.
Tobia and Hala originally settled in Dunedin. Tobias was a hawker of Drapery. The family moved to Invercargill at sometime during the 1920s and Tobia opened a Drapery Shop and a Shoe Shop in Invercargill.
I believe he had a siblings by the names of khallil and Joseph. Khallil emigrated to Argentina and Joseph to California in the USA. I believe that Khallil had Children named Roberto and Cecelia.
Richard the eldest child was commonly known as Joe. It is unknown if he was actually born in Melbourne or on the High Seas during his parents emigration to New Zealand. Joe married Jean (Jean’s son lived at Brooklands Village his name was Roy Thompstone he spoke to Glennys about Uncle Joe (Rasheed) as he called him and he spoke very highly of him).

On Tobia's Oath of Allegiance record he is named as Tobia Isaac Coory. The date on this document is August 15th 1905.
