The general layout of the drainage and flood protection scheme consisted of 22 mile long embankment following generally along or near the right bank of the Taieri River from where it emerges from the gorge at Outram, thence to Outram, and up the bank of the contour channel to a point beyond flood-level. The general fall of the West Taieri area is from Outram to Henley; a large pumping station was installed in the embankment at Henley.
