Somewhere around 10,000 people marched from the Octagon to the Dunedin Hospital on Friday 6 August, led by then Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin and Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadboldt.
The march was in support of Southern District Health Board's proposal that at least two neurosurgeons should remain in Dunedin, contra to the suggestion by Canterbury DHB that all six of the South Island's neurosurgeons be based in Canterbury.
About 1000 people had attended a public meeting in Dunedin on Monday 30 August, and had passed a resolution demanding retention of the services.
