Dunedin Midwinter Carnival

The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is an annual community celebration that usually takes place on the last Saturday of June, close to the longest night of the year. The Carnival, something unique to Dunedin, has been running since the year 2000, and is run by volunteers with the support of funders and sponsors. 

The event includes a large procession of lanterns through the central city, featuring dozens of giant lanterns created by local artists, and many smaller lanterns made by children and families at workshops in the lead-up to the carnival.

The 2013 carnival featured hundreds of costumed performers, music and dance, with a theme of "A Journey of Discovery". Giant lanterns included a sailing ship, double-hulled ocean-going waka, and a hot air balloon. There were also wearable lanterns worn by stilt walkers. The Artistic Director was Juliet Novena Sorrel.

Around 5000 people attended the carnival to watch around 100 performers and 500 lantern bearers, and performers included the Mosgiel Brass Band, Manawa Kapahaka, and Ra McCrostie.
