The Dunedin City Library on the Civic Plaza on Moray Place was opened to the public in November 1981, after six years of construction. The building was designed in consultation with then City Librarian Mary Ronnie, City Architects Bill Hesson and Tim Heath, and Project Architect Hunter Gillies.
This stained glass window was commissioned by the Dunedin Public Libraries Association as a gift to the Library on its opening. It was designed by Dunedin artist Shona McFarlane at a cost of $6,000 for design and construction. The window depicts a mix of tartans: Cameron with the Dunedin City coat of arms, and Royal Stewart.
