First Cottage Built at Livingstonia Park

FIRST COTTAGE BUILT AT THE PARK
By 1952 work had begun on the erection of the first of several cottages on the property . The work was done voluntarily at weekends by members of the Association and outside Organisations assisted at various periods. The operations of a bulldozer and weed-spraying were the only non-voluntary efforts. A workshop was built and one of the compartments was converted into a dining room for the working parties, the remainder of the shed housed building equipment and tools. Another property purchased by the Association was dismantled and removed to the park by truck. The work took about three weekends to complete. The Association then decided to build a concrete tank to take the water from the roof to the workshop.
The money spent on the project at Livingstonia Park was a result of community sings and private donations. These organisations included the Dunedin Community Sing, the 23rd Battalion and the Wakari Working Men’s Club. The Association was hoping to receive more funds and a Government subsidy. The hope was that 12 cottages will be built.
