OFFICAL OPENING OF WAR AMPUTEES COTTAGE
The first cottage at the park was officially opened in March 1955 by the Mayor Dunedin Mr (now Sir) Leonard M. Wright. It was officially named the “Community Sing Cottage”. A second cottage was completed in 1956. This cottage had been an old transit cottage and was donated to the Association by the Dunedin City Council. It was cut in half, transported to the site and rebuilt. Mayor Wright paid a tribute to Miss Joan Green, the donor of the eight acres of land. It was through her generous action that a scheme was able to get underway. In November 1954 an appear was then launched to raise money to build a total of 12 cottages, a large playing area, a picnic ground and a glassed in pavilion. Mr F. Jones of the Dunedin City Council said it was evident that a great deal of work and thought had gone into the scheme. Health camps such as the one envisaged by the Association had a benefit to the Community as a whole. “The public owes the servicemen and servicewomen of the two world wars a great deal. I hope the forthcoming appeal will be successful.” A total of 3,000 pounds was raised for the Association. This was used to improve the park and to continue with clearing more of the total eight acres.
