War Amputees Appeal for Finances

WAR AMPUTEES APPEAL FOR FINANCES
In 1957 an additional appeal was launched for at least5 5,000 pounds to complete the holiday and rest camp for War Amputees. The time had come when the strain of so much hard work was beginning to tell on the amputees. There was still a tremendous amount of work to be done in laying out the grounds attractively, building roadways and, subject to finance, erecting more cottages. This additional work would have to be done by contract. With that in view a special committee was set up to investigate ways of raising the necessary money. The Association which had the backing of the Dunedin Returned Services Association and its branches launched the appeal through the Dunedin Mayor, Sir Leonard Wright. It was hoped enough money would be raised to complete the scheme.
By the end of 1957, they had raised about 3,800 pounds. “Already two cottages have been erected” said Mr. Stan Gilchrist , President of the War Amputees’ Association. “Other improvements include bulldozing several sand hills into a hollow to make a reasonable level picnic ground. Now we intend to improve the cottages by roughcasting and painting, to erect further conveniences used to build a modern gateway and at the request of the Association’s supporters an honesty box is to go up. More than 1,000 trees and shrubs have been planted and further assistance has been offered by the Men of the Trees.” Because leg and arm amputees had difficulty in handling any of the jobs that had to be done, the assistance of sporting bodies was being sought for working bees, Mr Gilchrist said. Mr Gilchrist said that the area was a popular picnic ground with up to six picnics a weekend held at the grounds.
The association with the aid of members’ families, members of the Pirates Social Rugby Club, Tramways Social Club, R.S.A. executive, Tin Hat club, Rotary members and Men of the Trees built up the park from the dunes and planted a variety of trees.
The children of the war amputees knocked down the lupins. Sand and lupins were all that were there and that is what would return if all the trees were removed today. The pine trees were planted from 1955-1960. Stan Gilchrist’s children recall planting the seedlings every ten feet. Over 4,000 pounds of grass seed were sown.
