'Gertie' was purchased for £175 in 1950, and carried a load of 1000 books around Dunedin's hilly suburbs. She initially called at Mornington, Maori Hill, Roslyn, Corstorphine, Kaikorai, Forbury Corner, Andersons Bay and the Gardens. After her first week in service, there were 62 new library members as a result of her visits, and in the first five weeks of the new mobile service 3,782 volumes were borrowed.
