'Puff' started work as the new bookbus in 1976. The murals on the exterior of the bus were painted by the children of Portobello School. The theme was intended to show 'the dragons of ignorance being defeated by the suns of knowledge' [Mary Ronnie, Freedom to Read, p256], but the bus nevertheless became affectionately known as 'puff' due to the dragon motifs. The bus held a high proportion of books for older children, unlike the other buses in the fleet, which catered for adults and pre-school children.
