DescriptionAn interview, recorded as part of the Dunedin Public Libraries' oral history project on the effects on the Dunedin community of poliomyelitis outbreaks in the 1940s and 1950s. Interviewees are Doug Hankin, who contracted polio at the age of two, and his wife Rae Hankin who has recollections of conversations with Doug's mother about Doug's experience with Polio. Doug attended the Duncan Hospital in Whanganui for treatment. In this interview, Doug talks about his childhood, his time at the Duncan Hospital, how he has lived with the after-effects of polio, and latterly how he has been affected by post-polio. Rae and Doug also compare the polio epidemic in New Zealand with the current COVID pandemic.
