The Outram War Memorial, one of two for the town, situated on Holyhead Street at the junction with Hoylake Street (which had then led to the railway station), was erected in 1921.
For some time, the residents of West Taieri had been planning to mark the loss of local soldiers who had been killed in the First World War. Mr Peter Chisholm chaired a committee, which canvassed the district to raise funds for the memorial.
The memorial, inscribed with all those from the locality who had died in action, was formally unveiled by Mrs Sprott of Momona at a ceremony on 8th October 1921, with a large number in attendance. Mrs Sprott had lost three sons in the War.
