DescriptionThis was a trip up to the Saddle,Bevan Col, Mt Aspiring late 1960’s. The original Colin Todd Hut slept 6 at the time. Sam Cleland Police SAR Sergeant at the time in Dunedin wanted to go climbing. In this recording Ivan Maclachlan describes how Sam Cleland has a fall/slide on the side of Bevan Col as he lost his ice axe and tried to use his crampons to arrest - he ended up with an injury to the leg when he slid 50-60 metres. He was then lowered down back off the face to Scotts bivvy - the river was too high to get him to Aspiring Hut, so Don McTaggert and another member got across at Pearl Flat to get out and get help - the next day a helicopter came in to get Sam. The helicopter was from Clyde with Russell Goetslab as the pilot.
