DescriptionMatthew Sheat( Dunedin LandSAR and Police SAR Squad) talks to Ivan McLachlan about a search he was involved in the Arawata - this was in 1964 either February or March before helicopters were being used.
Ivan and other searchers were notified of an accident of a climbing party of 2 from the saddle to the valley of the Arawata. The climbing party were at a steep bluff and were to lower down their packs, then the other would climb down but a pack bowled one members of the party off and he was injured.
The uninjured party got to Arawata bivvy and then to Williamson flat (1000 acre flats), to the airstrip and box, where notes were left by deer cullers. He left a note there and headed back up the valley. A hunter found the note and contacted the police
A 4 man team was sent in very early in the morning, and were flown in to Williamson flat 2 at a time and met the deer hunter at the airstrip and got a description to where the missing parties were.
Roger Barrowclough and Paddy brought supplies in to the bivvy which were sausages.
